First Time for Every Thing

This Artist in Residency project sets a few new personal milestones.

Despite my many travels around the globe, my trip to Uganda with Sylvia’s Children will be my first visit to Africa. Not that I have never touched Saharan sand, but that’s because I only live 186 miles from the South African coastline.

This Artist in Residency project is breaking a few personal records:

  1. Never had I only one week in a school to rehearse with the pupils and perform!
  2. Never had I so many pupils actually performing in one production at the same time!

Just over 1,000 children and young people is a little daunting, but the challenge of producing a show with so many participants is not keeping me awake. Sylvia keeps telling me how disciplined and talented the kids are, so I think it will be a treat.

This project will also be the first time to create a Festival Spectacle on a circular road. In the past I have created shows in theatres, sport arenas and on fields, but to create something that moves along a road in a circle will be another aspect of this project that will make it very interesting creative challenge to me.
